11 plus authors create questions by including the same elements in each question.

Then, they add in 1 additional element which is only found in 1 of the answer options. This is the odd one out.

When writing series questions, 11 plus authors plan their each element which forms the patterns in the question. For example, the patterns could include changes in colour, amounts, size or direction. When you answer series questions, you need to work out what each part of the pattern is doing as part of the whole series.  Identify which of the answer options correctly explains the pattern in the question.

11 plus authors create most similar questions by having a list of the similarities for the question. They will then make sure that only 1 of the answer options has the same similarities as those in the question. When you are answering these questions, you can look at what do all the parts of the question have in common. Look at the question and the answer options given. Why is e the correct answer?

11 plus authors write these questions in a very similar way. The correct answer option will be either a rotation or a reflection depending on the question. The incorrect answer are created by:

• Taking the whole image and rotating it and reflecting it
• Taking part of the image and rotating it incorrectly 
• Taking part of the image and reflecting it incorrectly
• Taking part of the image and changing the size, colour, direction or completely omitting part of it

11 plus authors will create their correct answer by making sure that the cube net matches the cube. 

In order to create the other answer options which do not match the cube and are incorrect. They will  incorrect because:

• The faces cannot touch each other (learn the faces of a cube net which do / do not touch). 
• The direction of one of the faces is incorrect and so would not be in that direction when made into a cube
• There is a change in the colour or size of the one of the objects on one of the faces.
• One of the objects is omitted from the faces.
